Ethiopians living in the USA that don’t have the legal immigrant status to live and work will be able to apply for temporary protected status between Dec. 12th, 2022, and June 12th, 2024. ย They can apply with Form I-821. They can also apply, for a work permit with Form I-765 at the same time.
To qualify for temporary protected status, they must demonstrate their continuous residenceย in the United States since October 20th, 2022. They must also demonstrate their physical presence in the United States since December 12th, 2022. If they arrived in the United States after October 20th, 2022, they are not eligible.
Getting the temporary protected status does not grant the applicant legal permanent residence or citizenship. When Ethiopia’s temporary protected status expires, their status will also expire and they may be subject to potential deportation if they have not started the process of becoming a legal immigrant or nonimmigrant through some other means.
